The saga of the Cedar Key pier

The Cedar Key pier was the focal point of this small fishing village. People came to the pier to fish, to unload their wares such as sponges, to socialize, or just to sit in the sun and relax.

But one day a hurricane roared in from the Gulf of Mexico and devastated the pier. For years, it sat, a mess of broken boards and pilings.

Today, however, the pier has been rebuilt. Constructed of concrete and steel pilings driven deep into the ocean floor, it looks to be able to withstand anything Mother Nature can throw at it.

The people are back. It's not the same, of course; never will be. But it is solid and in its own way, beautiful.

Well... sometimes things have to be rebuilt; I can see what you mean about it not being the same, but still a nice place for a stroll...

What a beautiful spot--wish I could be there right now. Pretty pix. It's cold here.

We sailed there from clearwater beach twice, once in '88 and '90. You used to be able to tie up your boat to the old wooden pier but not the new concrete one. Go to google maps and do the drive-by (street view) and you can see them building the new pier.

Hi Dave...We were first in Cedar Key in late 1988 and 1989, too! I've got lots of photos of the old pier, which I liked very much. It had character and class.

Problem was it couldn't stand up to the hurricanes.

So this one probably will stay put through a hurricane, but it's not nearly as much fun as the old one.

Thanks for writing!
